During WW2, the USAAF 8th Air Force required a headquarters for its senior officers, and this girls' school became that place.In March 1942, on the first night of residence here, a very loud ringing sound could be heard emanating from the many rooms and dormitories throughout the wood panelled corridors of the school. It was discovered that by the bedside of every bed was a night bell alongside a notice which read: "If you need a mistress in the night, ring twice".Needless to say......
